Wilbert de Joode is widely regarded as one of the foremost bassists in improvised music. He plucks, prods, bows and scrapes his bass with impeccable intuition and a vast vocabulary drawing from all corners of improvised music. Completely self taught, his approach to the instrument and improvisation in general is wholly unique. Wilbert is also one of the most attentive listeners around, which ensures phenomenal tone regardless of setting. Whether playing fiery free jazz with the likes of Charles Gayle and the late Sunny Murray, sensitively negotiating abstract sonic landscapes with Christine Abdelnour and Le Quan Ninh or mischievously coaxing singing timbres out of a wine glass at a fine Italian eatery, quality of sound is always of utmost importance.…

All Ellington CD Presentation – Bimhuis and Brakke Grond

All Ellington is about to release their first CD on de Platenbakkerij label and will be celebrating later this month at the Bimhuis. It’s becoming something of a year-end tradition for All Ellington to present their reinterpretations of Ellington’s elegant compositions at the Bim. If you don’t want to wait, they are also performing at De Brakke Grond as part of a program by Belgian theater group De Nwe Tijd.…

After a refreshing summer filled with festivals and fun, the new season for improvised music has now begun. Amsterdam is chock-full of great venues and improvised series – be sure to check out Present Sounds Amsterdam to get an overview of everything going on. The Zomer Jazz Fiets Tour is one of our favorite events in the Netherlands. Incredible music presented all over the countryside in the province of Groningen- you can hear bands in barns, churches, quaint houses and theaters. (In fact, we liked the ZJFT so much we stole the idea for our own festival and the Amsterdam Real Book Bike Tour has become a regular part of the Doek Festival.)…
