Kaja Draksler is a pianist and composer who is continually evolving and growing as an improviser, proving to be one of the shining stars of the youngest generation of improvisers globally. Aside from possessing virtuosic technique and stellar listening capabilities, her studious nature has allowed her to glean a great understanding of jazz and “classical” form and harmony, with a healthy sense of folk music as a kicker.
Last year, her project the Kaja Draksler Octet made waves, receiving numerous accolades and performing at some of the most prestigious festivals in the world.…
Doek is bringing The Market to the Bimhuis concert hall for our Doek Festival on June 14 and 15. Last Saturday 11 May, Michael Moore, Eric Boeren, Wolter Wierbos and Onno Govaert brought the concert hall to the Noordermarkt. Here’s Elsie Vermeer’s video of that event.…

John Dikeman, originally from Wyoming, burst onto the Amsterdam scene 10 years ago, bringing with him a ferocious sensibility to the saxophone with an emphasis on pure sound and expression. His playing draws on the history of what could be called American free jazz but with a knowledge of various more European approaches sometimes termed non-idiomatic improvisation. Having performed since an early age all over the world in a wide range of settings, jazz, blues, classical, and even Arabic music have informed his sensibilities to make him a surprisingly versatile player.…

One of the most active musicians in the Netherlands, Jasper Stadhouders is not only busy playing guitar and bass but also composing for projects including the PolyBand, Cactus Truck, Spinifex and trio Stadhouders / Govaert / De Joode among many others. He’s also a member of numerous international ensembles such as Ken Vandermark’s Made to Break, and the trio Rempis / Stadhouders / Rosaly. Makiko Ito has been one of the leading improvisers and choreographers of the Dutch improvised dance scene since she arrived in Amsterdam in 2005. Aside from her exuberant body work she also has the wonderful ability to work with improvising musicians of various backgrounds and truly interact, allowing both mediums to shine without one becoming subservient to the other. She is a long time member of the Magpie Umbrella where she has worked with renowned dancers Katie Duck and Michael Schumacher, who have been some of her greatest creative influences.…
