The new season begins

After a refreshing summer filled with festivals and fun, the new season for improvised music has now begun. Amsterdam is chock-full of great venues and improvised series – be sure to check out Present Sounds Amsterdam to get an overview of everything going on. Here are some highlights featuring Doek ensembles.

Space is the Place at De Ruimte has already hosted a number of great shows and will begin their collaboration with Doek November 9 featuring Cactus Truck with special guest James Brandon Lewis as well as an incredibly rare, heavily amplified bass solo by Wilbert de Joode.…

This month we will be doing a live recording in Zaal 100 with a quartet chosen by Portuguese trumpet monster Luis Vicente. It could be argued that live performance is the ideal environment for recording improvised music. So much of the music draws on the energy of the room and the audience. Come be a part of the process and hear this quartet in action!…

We’re celebrating Koningsnacht with some amazing musicians from the New World. I’m sure they’ll wear orange though.

Ken Aldcroft and Scott Thomson have been performing together since 2005. In addition, they have worked together extensively as co-founders of the Association of Improvising Musicians Toronto (AIMToronto), a musicians’ collective that hosted many exceptional visiting musicians, including Evan Parker, William Parker, Eddie Prévost, Joe McPhee, and Urs Leimgruber, always in collaboration with Toronto musicians.…
