Bacchanalia, which first began as part of the Second Stop is Jupiter series at De Ruimte, has been taking over the Dutch scene with its fiery free improvisational approach to Cumbia music. The band’s performances are chaotic and exhilarating, and inspire no small amount of dancing. Their inspiration comes from Bacchus, the Greco-Roman god of wine, freedom, intoxication and ecstasy, all of which we will have in abundance at Sexyland for the closing performance of the festival.…

Wilbert de Joode is widely regarded as one of the foremost bassists in improvised music. He plucks, prods, bows and scrapes his bass with impeccable intuition and a vast vocabulary drawing from all corners of improvised music. Completely self taught, his approach to the instrument and improvisation in general is wholly unique. Wilbert is also one of the most attentive listeners around, which ensures phenomenal tone regardless of setting. Whether playing fiery free jazz with the likes of Charles Gayle and the late Sunny Murray, sensitively negotiating abstract sonic landscapes with Christine Abdelnour and Le Quan Ninh or mischievously coaxing singing timbres out of a wine glass at a fine Italian eatery, quality of sound is always of utmost importance.…

The enfant terrible of the new Dutch impro scene, Oscar Jan Hoogland sprung onto the Amsterdam landscape approximately a decade ago, at the forefront of the latest group of improvisers to arrive and simultaneously uphold the tradition of New Dutch Swing even while tearing it apart. He is currently on faculty for the composition department at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague and the Mime department for the Academie voor Theater en Dans in Amsterdam.…

Onno Govaert’s percussion abilities, which display a rare combination of seemingly unlimited technical resources, great orchestral sense, fearless decision making, sensitivity and unbound energy, all add up to making him one of the best young drummers in improvised music. He’s a member of numerous Doek ensembles: Cactus Truck, Feecho, Kaja Draksler Octet, Stadhouders/de Joode/Govaert, Omawi and The PolyBand. He’s also involved in Doek adjacent ensembles including Bacchanalia and the Zebra Street Band. Besides playing with absolutely everyone in the Dutch music scene, Onno has performed with Peter Brötzmann, William Parker, Joe McPhee, Ken Vandermark, Rodrigo Amado, Linda Sharrock, Jeb Bishop and countless others.…
