Biography

Duke Ellington – his music is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for musicians of all styles and generations. That same goes for All Ellington, a tentet founded in 2012 by Eric Boeren. Musicians from the flourishing Amsterdam impro scene tackle Ellington arrangements from the pen of Michael Moore. Respect for the original goes hand in hand with individuality and inventiveness. Besides big hits like Mood Indigo and Sophisticated Lady, the ensemble also shines its light on lesser-known pieces such as Boy Meets Horn, African Flower and Jack the Bear. Smiles guaranteed all round.

Reviews

All Ellington played in Niehove church, 10 minutes cycling further on. Led by cornet player Eric Boeren, musicians under the umbrella of Stichting Doek played Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. The church was packed to the rafters. The combination Ellington, Doek and new jazz evidently worked like a magnet. Boeren had transcribed pieces from Ellington albums. To my great joy he began with numbers from the Such Sweet Thunder suite, following Ellington’s instrumentation pretty closely. In the spirit of Ellington, saxophonist Michael Moore, trombonist Joost Buis, trumpet player Jimmy Sernesksy, Boeren himself and, not to forget, vocalist Jodi Gilbert, put their own stamp on the music but never lost respect for the original. The Doek improvisers handled the music very well. It’s a pity Christiano Verlaino wasn’t named in the programme – his coloured the music in exemplary fashion. What a breath of fresh air to hear Ellington live, played with both feet firmly planted on the ground. This ensemble should do this more often. And record it!”
