COUNTDOWN TO DOEK FESTIVAL 2016 – Warelis / Govaert / de Joode
Day 2 of the Festival: April 30 – Marta Warelis / Wilbert de Joode / Onno Govaert
The trio Warelis / de Joode / Govaert emerged from Amsterdam’s flourishing improvised music circuit and unites two generations of improvisers: the young, up-and-coming Onno Govaert and Marta Warelis with ‘old dog’ and Doek member Wilbert de Joode.
Together, they dip into a rich source of experiences and ideas to create music that is urgent and extremely flexible – always in search of the perfect sound.
Wilbert de Joode is currently one of the most active bass players in the European improvised music scene, being involved in several musical projects. His individual style and musicality transforms the double bass into an equal partner in the most varied ensembles. A personal tone colour, exploration of the outer registers, quirky improvisations and the use of gut strings contribute to an instantly recognizable and intriguing sound.
Before studying at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen, Polish pianist Marta Warelis has been playing with a lot of different music ensembles which music styles varied from progressive rock to funk. Her actual focus though, jazz music, has always been her favourite.
Drummer Onno Govaert moved to Amsterdam to study jazz drums and graduated cum laude from the Conservatorium of Amsterdam in 2009. His playing has variously been described as ‘innovative’, ‘spectacular’, ‘relentless’, ‘possessed by the devil’ and ‘post Jim Black’. Besides appearing regularly in the Bimhuis, including a 2013 Carte Blanche, he has taken part in two Young VIPS tours for young Dutch talent, Onno has played at leading European festivals including Moers, Cerkno, Reykjavik, Kosice and Jazzmarathon Brussels.
