Doek Festival selected for EFFE Label 2015-2016

EFFE-LABEL-COLOR The Doek Festival has been recognized by EFFE International Jury to receive the EFFE Label 2015-2016. EFFE – Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe, initiated by the European Festivals Association, is the portal for citizens and for professionals to discover and get involved in Europe’s finest festivals. Following a process of intense evaluation from national experts to an international jury, 761 festivals from 31 countries now belong to the first generation of EFFE Label recipients. Strong music calls for strong images, and many, many jazz photographers have enriched our understanding of the art by capturing the way improvised action looks in the moment. The Doek festival and Doek’s musicians are grateful to the many photographers who have documented music on our stages over the years. To officially recognize the contribution such visual artists make, in 2015 the festival named the first Doek Photographer in Residence, Sara Anke Morris.

In addition, they have worked together extensively as co-founders of the Association of Improvising Musicians Toronto (AIMToronto), a musicians’ collective that hosted many exceptional visiting musicians, including Evan Parker, William Parker, Eddie Prévost, Joe McPhee, and Urs Leimgruber, always in collaboration with Toronto musicians.…

Wolter Wierbos to teach at ArtEZ

slide-wolter-wierbos1Wolter Wierbos will join the music faculty at the renowned ArtEZ Hogeschool in Arnhem this September. Headed by pianist, composer Michael Braam, ArtEZ has one of the most forward thinking curricula of the Netherlands. They also host a faculty of some of the greatest musicians and improvisers of the region, including Doek’s own Wilbert de Joode. Now trombonists will have a chance to study with one of the greatest living trombonists in improvised music.
