Best of 2017

At the end of every year music journalists compile lists of musicians and concerts they felt were the highlights of the year. This year, once again, Doek was well represented with numerous accolades. Especially in the case of Kaja Draksler, far too many to mention! Kaja was honoured for her albums – Gledalec by the Kaja Draksler Octet and To Pianos, her duo with Eve Risser. She also topped lists in categories pianist, composer, group and new ensemble. Jasper Stadhouders found his name on countless lists especially in the category electric bass, most likely thanks to his playing with Ken Vandermark’s Made to Break whose new albums topped many lists.…

This month’s SITP ft Doek features two special duos. Wilbert de Joode double bass and guest Julyen Hamilton present a magical and spirited blend of improvised double bass and poetry/spoken word. John Dikeman tenor sax and Wolter Wierbos trombone play duo for the first time – we’re anticipating fireworks, warmth and virtuosity.

Then over to the big room for the Second Stop is Jupiter at 23:00, with danceable jazz, Turkish and cumbia music.…

Starting off with solos from two pianists with very different approaches to their instruments: Oscar Jan Hoogland and Kaja Draksler.

Then we move to the big room at 22:30 to hook up with BAZOOKA. – a fab band featuring The Ex-guitarist Andy Moor. playing Angolan dance music.

New chance for Doek thanks to increased investment in the arts

Last Friday the Minister for Education, Culture and Science, Ingrid van Engelshoven, announced an extra investment of €10 million per year for the arts and culture. The budget of the Performing Arts Fund (FPK) will rise by €9 million per year in the period 2018 – 2020. This money will go to the so-called B category organizations and arts companies whose subsidy application had been approved, but for whom insufficient funds were available. This means that Doek will receive structural subsidy for the next three years.…

Trio Rubato
Tristan Honsinger solo cello

Besides improvisations, Trio Rubato mainly plays Frankie Douglas’ compositions that reflect his musical roots in Curaçao. The lyrical, deceptively simple pieces are handled with elegance, passion and spirit by three fantastic improvisers.

Tristan Honsinger – ICP’s dada performer cello maestro. We have been amazed by his group Hook Line & Sinker and now we get to see and hear him play solo.…
