This week All Ellington – Jodi Gilbert vocals, Mo van der Does alto sax/clarinet, Natalio Sued tenorsax, Giuseppe Doronzo baritone sax, Jimmy Sernesky trumpet, Eric Boeren cornet, Joost Buis trombone, Oscar Jan Hoogland piano, Wilbert de Joode bass, Frank Rosaly drums – are in Jazzcase Dommelhof in Neerpelt, Belgium for a 4 day residency. All Ellington was founded by Eric Boeren in 2012 with the intention of exploring well-known and minder well-known pieces by the legendary band leader Duke Ellington. As in Ellington’s orchestra, respect for the orginal compositions goes hand in hand with the individuality and inventiveness of the band memebers.…

The Present Continues to be Present

The Present Is Present Festival finished with an all-nighter in De Ruimte that will definitely go down as legendary! The week of concerts in the Bimhuis, Splendor, Huis de Pinto, Zaal 100, Broedplaats Surinameplein, Occii, De Tanker and De Ruimte confirmed, if anyone doubted it, the depth and breadth of talent and the diversity of music in the Amsterdam impro scene. Boy Edgar Prize award night

wilbertsaraankeOn Wednesday December 7, the Buma Boy Edgar Prize 2016 will be awarded to Doek founding member Wilbert de Joode during a festive concert evening in the Bimhuis. Wilbert has curated a very special programme especially for this occasion. There’ll be performances from the long-standing Kaufmann/Gratkowski/De Joode trio and the Ab Baars trio, who will be joined by the young pianist Marta Warelis. Wilbert has invited a number of kindred spirits – Peter van Bergen and Tobias Delius, saxophone and clarinets; Ada Rave, saxophone; and Michael Vatcher and Onno Govaert, drums – who, together with the trio musicians, will perform in all sorts of intriguing line-ups.…

Wilbert de Joode wins Buma Boy Edgar Prize

Wilbert-de-Joode-foto-Sara-Anke-Morris-1-1Wilbert de Joode, a founding member of the Doek collective, has been awarded the 2016 Buma Boy Edgar Prize. The Buma Boy Edgarprijs is awarded each year to an artist who has long demonstrated his or her outstanding creative contribution to the vitality of the Dutch jazz and improvised scene. Wilbert is the fourth member of the collective to win this prize, other winners being Michael Moore (1986), Wolter Wierbos (1995) and Tobias Delius (2003).

No subsidy for Stichting Doek, despite extra funding

Amsterdam, 26 September 2016

Dear Sir/Madam,
In September Minister Bussemaker announced that she had made an extra 10 million euros available to spend on culture in the coming 4 years. As Doek board members we heartily applaud this measure. At the same time we are shocked and bewildered by how this money will be allocated.…
