James Fei saxophone, electronics

James Fei (b. Taipei, Taiwan) moved to the US in 1992 to study electrical engineering. He has since been active as a composer and performer on saxophones and live electronics. Works by Fei have been performed by the Bang on a Can All-Stars, Orchestra of the S.E.M. Ensemble, MATA Micro Orchestra and Noord-Hollands Philharmonisch Orkest. Recordings can be found on Leo Records, Improvised Music from Japan, CRI, Krabbesholm and Organized Sound. Compositions for Fei’s own ensemble of four alto saxophones focus on physical processes of saliva, fatigue, reeds crippled by cuts and the threshold of audible sound production, while his sound installations and performance on live electronics often focus on feedback.…

Featured Artist – De Bakfietsband

bakfietsbandThe Bakfietsband is a band in a bakfiets. Back in the 90’s some things were of great importance: Since a street band in Amsterdam could not play for more than half an hour in the same spot, and only acoustic music was allowed, the boys of De Bakfietsband had to make a few adaptations to their plans to conquer the world. All the instruments were put on one bike. The players inside the bak (box) of the fiets (bike) – Jochem van Tol, Oscar Jan Hoogland and Harald Austbø – had to go on a diet, as did Jappe Groenendijk, who was biking as well but on a very different diet.…

While still in high school Onno Govaert (1987, Kaatsheuvel, NL) was already playing with such well-known Dutch jazz musicians as Eric Vloeimans and Harmen Fraanje. He moved to Amsterdam to study jazz drums and graduated cum laude from the Conservatorium of Amsterdam in 2009.
His playing has variously been described as ‘innovative’, ‘spectacular’, ‘relentless’, ‘possessed by the devil’ and ‘post Jim Black’. ‘Onno Govaert stokes the band’s fires with spazzy rumbles and unflagging motion’, commented Chicago Reader, and Volkskrant described his style as ‘full of initiative and uninhibited.’…

Nate Wooley trumpet

He was born in 1974 in Clatskanie, Oregon. He began playing trumpet professionally with his father, a big band saxophonist, at the age of 13. His time in Oregon instilled in Nate a musical aesthetic that has informed all of his music making for the past 20 years.
Nate moved to New York in 2001, and has since become one of the most in-demand trumpet players in the burgeoning Brooklyn jazz, improv, noise, and new music scenes.…

Featured Artist – Kaja Draksler

Kaja Draksler piano

Kaja Draksler is a jazz pianist and composer originally from Slovenia and now residing in Amsterdam. She obtained her Masters degree in classical composition at the Conservatorium of Amsterdam and her Bachelor in jazz piano at Prince Claus Conservatory in Groningen, The Netherlands in 2009. In 2008 she was spending a semester at Purchase Collage (NY). In 2005 she finished High School for Music in Ljubljana (jazz department) and Diocesan Classical Gymnasium Ljubljana.

Kaja Draksler’s current projects include Solo, several Duets; with Onno Govaert (Feecho), Matiss Čudars, and Susana Santos Silvam, and Trio- BadBooshBand.…

Ingrid’s current projects as a leader are Anti-House, Sleepthief, Ingrid Laubrock Orchestra and Ubatuba. Collaborations include LARK, Haste, Paradoxical Frog and Ingrid Laubrock/Tom Rainey Duo.…
