We have five new releases this summer from Doek related artists. First up is a recording from our newest Doek member, Jasper Stadhouders, with one of our artistic founders, Wolter Wierbos. Tim Daisy, one of the busiest drummers in Chicago and a frequent collaborator with Jasper Stadhouders in Ken Vandermark’s Made to Break, rounds out the session. As Draaiomjeoren put it: “We are talking about improvisation at the highest level.” Enough said.
Next we have a DVD of Hook, Line & Sinker from Doek Festival 2016. The focus of that festival was to highlight groups from Amsterdam, Berlin and Chicago and this group beautifully represents a certain absurd glimpse of the Berlin scene (with echoes of Amsterdam – Tobias Delius being a founding member of Doek and Tristan Honsinger a long standing member of ICP who has lived in Amsterdam off and on through the years). Hook, Line & Sinker were given three nights to perform in the Spinhuis, a completely unique venue in Amsterdam located under a canal bridge. This DVD, beautifully filmed by Elsie Vermeer and recorded by Ron Ruiten, gives you the best representation of a delightfully theatrical and spontaneous performance, full of musical genius and wit, short of being in the Spinhuis yourself.
Also just released: two albums featuring different collaborations between John Dikeman and Belgian multi-instrumentalist Dirk Serries. The tape, Day Realms, showcases them in trio with Dead Neanderthals drummer, Rene Aquarius. The double CD, Double Vortex, presents 2 sets performed at the Vortex in London. First in Quartet, with Andrew Lisle and Colin Webster, then veteran, maverick saxophonist Alan Wilkinson joins for the second disc.
” ‘Day Realms’ opens like a crest of sunlight rolling across on a malevolent sea, the waves rippling and boiling with tension. … [it] has moments of the sustained menace of its predecessor, but its the dynamics the trio have begun to explore on this record; space, soloist runs and creating moments for each other to share their individual voices that really must ensure that these cats keep making this music together, the development in sound so huge. A soul stirrer, no fucking doubt and an essential slice of modern European Free Jazz.”

Live in Concert, recorded at Studio Loos in 2016, features Boston pianist Eric Zinman. Eric has been coming to the Netherlands off and on the past few years and performed with John and Onno several times in a number of settings, most notably with Linda Sharrock and Mario Rechtern. Finally, Nachtstuck have decided to release this blistering live set from the trio formation.
