John Dikeman is going back to his roots to play music loosely based on church music from his upbringing with two of the musicians that first inspired him to play free jazz.

“William Parker and Hamid Drake are two of the musicians I’ve listened to the most since I first discovered free jazz as a teenager. At that time in the late 90s it seemed like they were on every album I bought. The first time I saw them live, one of the first free jazz concerts I ever attended, was in the Pyramid Trio with Roy Campbell, with whom I feel very fortunate to have played on a few occasions before his untimely death early this year. The depth of their sound and strength of their groove, whether in time or free, lifted every group they played in. Together, William and Hamid have played so much together, it’s hard to think of a better rhythm section in any genre, anywhere. This year I decided it was time to try and play with them! I feel extremely honored (and terrified!) to bring this trio together.”
