In Zaandam we have the Jazz Inverdan series, formerly known as Jazz in Serah. Back then, Eric Boeren was the curator. “For years guitarist Jasper Stadhouders has been a sensation on the Amsterdam and international free improvisation scene, but his ambitions extend further. Gaudeamus is glad to help him realize his dreams by commissioning a work to be performed by his PolyBand. With PolyBand he brings together a large group of musician friends of his for a dizzying, unstoppable cocktail of krautrock, mathcore, cumbia and more. The gigantic band keeps switching between tight control and total surrender, in a 90-minute-long hypnotizing composition which could just as easily last 6 hours.…

Kaja Draksler Octet – festival hit

The Kaja Draklser Octet has been busy these past weeks with appearances at Ljubljana Jazz Festival, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Molde Jazz Festival and Wonderfeel. Read Peter Margasak’s Downbeat review of the octet’s Ljubljana performance below. “A number of Slovenian artists performed throughout the festival without leaving much of an impression. But pianist Kaja Draksler—a native now based in Copenhagen after a lengthy spell in Amsterdam—gave the best performance of the festival with her unconventional octet, finessing gossamer-fine chamber pieces, mostly built around the poetry of Robert Frost.…

Bye bye Doek Festival 2019


So, Doek Festival 2019 is over. The Market packed up and moved on, and Saturnalia ended in a cloud of smoke and Cumbia. A big thank you to all who came, to all who performed, to all who volunteerd, to those who documented it, to the stall holders, to Bimhuis, to Sociëteit SEXYLAND. It was a blast.
