The new Doek book, hot off the press

doekbookphotoDoek has just produced a book centred around Doek Festival 2015 featuring programme information, brief bios of the artists involved, essays by Kevin Whitehead and Ruud Kagie, a dialogue between Taylor Ho Bynum and Eric Boeren, Q&As between Kevin Whitehead and Carl Testa, Kaja Draksler, Tomeka Reid and Onno Govaert, a highlight on photographer in residence Sara Anke Morris and more. Edited by Kevin Whitehead and Carolyn Muntz with graphic design by Isabelle Vigier, it’s quite a handsome little publication, if we do say so ourself.…

Doek Festival selected for EFFE Label 2015-2016

EFFE-LABEL-COLOR The Doek Festival has been recognized by EFFE International Jury to receive the EFFE Label 2015-2016. EFFE – Europe for Festivals, Festivals for Europe, initiated by the European Festivals Association, is the portal for citizens and for professionals to discover and get involved in Europe’s finest festivals. Following a process of intense evaluation from national experts to an international jury, 761 festivals from 31 countries now belong to the first generation of EFFE Label recipients. Strong music calls for strong images, and many, many jazz photographers have enriched our understanding of the art by capturing the way improvised action looks in the moment. The Doek festival and Doek’s musicians are grateful to the many photographers who have documented music on our stages over the years. To officially recognize the contribution such visual artists make, in 2015 the festival named the first Doek Photographer in Residence, Sara Anke Morris.

John Dikeman saxophone

John Dikeman was born in Nebraska in 1983 and grew up in Kemmerer, Wyoming. Thanks to the extreme isolation of his hometown, he spent most of his free time practicing and studying music. He quickly discovered the music of John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, John Zorn, and Albert Ayler and instantly connected to the unmatched expressive power of free jazz. John was very fortunate to meet and collaborate with many excellent improvisers at a rather early age.…
