Workshopping compositions

It goes without saying that the musicians of Doek view improvisation as paramount to their creative process. Many of the Doek groups have an international reputation for their strong combination of improvisation and composition.
How does this relationship work? Can we lift a corner of the veil and give insight into that creative process?

For Sunday, March 30, 2014, we’ve invited two young musicians to form a group with a few members of Doek. In the space of an hour they will work on a composition featuring improvisation and then perform it for the first time.…

Wilbert and Michael have been playing together in countless settings for over 25 years and are without a doubt one of the great rhythm sections in improvised music. Both showcase an extremely personal approach to their instrument which focuses on sound and spontaneity.
